Measuring Makes You Slimmer and Healthier

   This editorial website includes personal
observations by Masa Eto on an array of topics,
from world affairs to business. Mr. Eto is the
international division director at A&D Company Ltd.

When we launched the UC-321, Precision Personal Health Scale, one of our selling pitches was that with 50 gram accuracy you will see a change of your weight after drinking just one cup of coffee. This 50 gram precision enables you track daily changes of your weight and motivate you to monitor and control your diet and lifestyle so that you can diet and lose weight - just by weighing yourself.

Recently accurate and precision weighing has become an issue of great interest in a popular TV program of NHK (Japan Broadcasting Corporation), called “Tameshite Gatten” or “Try it and Eureka!” http://www.nhk.or.jp/bunken/bcri-rup/h13-ru1.html This program has gained great popularity as it encourages viewers to see things in a new and scientific light covering topics of everyday science.

The most recent program turned out to support and reinforce our message for a need of accurate weighing throughout the 45 minute broadcast. The program’s title was “Diet Just by Measuring”. Among all the diet drugs, supplements and methods and diet foods, this TV program “Try It and Eureka” points out that one of the most simple and effective methods of dieting is to measure your weight accurately and record it daily. This method has been proposed and supported by Dr. Osamu Tochikugo, MD, who is well known in the field of the public health and hypertensive blood pressure works and studies. In the TV program he strongly recommends that we measure weight by a scale of 50 gram accuracy and record the data in a graphic line chart. His recommended graph chart can be obtained through http://www.nhk.or.jp/gatten/archive/2003q4/dietcal_a4.pdf .However, I believe the smart readers have already noticed that we created Weight Diary software exactly for this purpose, which can be down-loaded from software.

The program featured its Director of 39 years of age, who himself followed this scheme for 3 months and reduced his weight by 7 kg. The program summarized 5 main points for dieting by this method as follows.

1. Measure your weight twice a day. Once in the morning right after you go to the toilet, and again right after dinner.
2. Record your weight in a line graph chart paper of 100 gram increments.
3. When you have put on weight, you write down any reason or excuse you can think of for your gain so you don’t feel stress over the increase.
4. Try to reduce by 50 to 100 gram a day, as dieting at that pace has no detrimental effect on your health or weight loss rebound.
5. Avoid overfilling yourself, and after measuring your post dinner weight avoid taking in any food and drink except water or tea of no calories.

The program concluded by saying that people who try this method come to enjoy watching the line graph going down indicating their success, and this motivates them to overcome the temptation of eating or taking in oily or sugary food. It is very important the graph is posted so you can grasp what is happening at a glance. Once you start getting the satisfaction of seeing the line graph going down, extra walking, pedaling ergometers, lifting weights and avoiding excess eating become fun. A scale that shows a daily change of your weight is essential, it added.

Incidentally, right after this program was put on air, we began receiving phone calls from people throughout Japan. It is great encouragement to learn our guiding principle, or product concept, regarding the development of the 50 gram accuracy has been so well demonstrated by an independent, well-respected TV program highlighting the fundamental reason behind our thinking. The program directs our attention to the psychological effect of measuring. When we see a positive change immediately after we take an action, we are motivated and encouraged to continue to work toward our goal, and eventually that leads us to learn how to control our weight. This 50 gram precision motivates you to control your weight as it shows a change in real time.

It reminded me of a comment that Mr. Shinya Goto, a well respected sportscaster, made during the Talk Show with Mari Tanigawa at the UC-321 press conference two and half years ago, “This scale is so accurate that it helps you develop an internal scale of your own within your body leading to an ultimate form of controlling your weight. This precision scale eventually eliminates a need for weighing as you develop your own.”

It is great to know our UC-321 does not merely remain a champion of precision among consumer health scales, but also liberates people from being overweight and dieting fear or trauma.
