The UM-101 was red-hot in the tropics!
19th Hospital Expo, Jakarta, Indonesia

Reported by Hiroshi Oyama, International Division

We were delighted with the popular response to the UM-101 at this year's Hospital Expo in Jakarta. The 19th Hospital Expo was held between November 22nd and 25th 2006 at the Jakarta Convention Center in Jakarta, Indonesia. This is the largest medical exhibition in Indonesia as well as being the biggest seminar session for hospital management in the region. A significant number of people gathered at the convention center during this show. The attendees at this convention are mainly management level staff at hospitals or clinics and/or head nurses or government officials working in the healthcare field. Dealers from all over the country were in attendance as it is one of the best opportunities for trading during the year.

Our medical agent, Paradana Estiara Medical, increased the size of their display and this year set up two booths in two separate locations. One focused on A&D's personal blood pressure lines and the other was for our professional lines. This year's highlight was the UM-101, our mercury-free sphygmomanometer. It was launched in Indonesia last year and the medical community there is beginning to pay attention to this "mercury-free" product due to worldwide concerns about the use of mercury sphygmomanometers. From the first day of this exhibition, the booth where the UM-101 was located was crowded with people interested in seeing this new technology firsthand. We had 3 UM-101 units on show, which were connected with a t-tube and displayed side-by-side with mercury sphygmomanometers to compare their displays.

Due to the fact that most of the visitors to our booth were medical professionals, they took no time in trying out our UM-101 and I was a willing volunteer for their tests.

This year, our booth staff wore a traditional Japanese outfit, a "happi," which is well known outside Japan as a "happy coat." We had great success with these outfits and were continuously busy throughout the entire show.

On the first day, we held a seminar for an invited audience. Over 100 people attended a lecture given by Dr. Kasim at the Harapan Kita Hospital (National Cardiovascular Center) who spoke about the harmful effects of toxic metals on the human body. A&D representatives also gave speeches and presentations. We had positive feedback from this approach and many attendees came to realize that they must remove mercury from their local environment in order to protect themselves and their patients.
