 The Philippine Hospital Association (PHA) held its 58th annual convention at the Manila Hotel in Manila from November 25th to 27th, 2007. PHA is the largest organization of private hospitals in the Philippines and its members came from all over the country to attend the event, including from islands such as Cebu. In total, more than over 400 PHA members were gathered in the ballroom of the Manila Hotel to discuss various topics under the theme of "Hospitals: Accelerating Response to Emerging Challenges". Participants at this year's convention were from various sectors of Philippine's healthcare society, ranging from government officials to NPO representatives. |

Our Medical Product Manager, Mr. Hiroshi Oyama, had the opportunity to present a speech as one of the guest speakers from outside the PHA. Mr. Oyama's speech, "Mercury in Healthcare, The Enemy in the Midst," drew on the past experiences of Japanese people to articulate the hazards of mercury to the audience.

Recently, Filipinos have started realizing the dangers of mercury and have already started initiatives to ban mercury. In the healthcare sector mercury is still visible, even in the hospital environment. Some major and visible usages of mercury include amalgam for dental filling, and in thermometers and sphygmomanometers. Mr. Oyama's speech reminded the audience of the dangers mercury posed and asked the audience to accelerate the movement to ban mercury. Although Mr. Oyama's speech did not directly touch on the UM-101, it indirectly highlighted the significance of our mercury free UM-101 Sphygmomanometer. As a result, the mercury free UM-101 Sphygmomanometer received a lot of attention and inquiries at the exhibition which followed the PHA convention. |
