Dialysis Treatment and BP Measurement
Reported by Takashi Watanabe International Division 2

6,900,000 sufferers in Japan
18,200,000 sufferers in the USA
40,000,000 sufferers in China

Can you imagine what I am talking about? I am talking about the number of people who have been diagnosed as suffering from diabetes, which is kidney (renal) failure.

Now how do people who suffer get treated?
There are two typical types of dialysis treatment. One is hemodialysis (HD) (or Artificial Kidney). Dialyzers are used to remove excessive fluid and waste products from the blood, typically three times per week. Most patients with renal failure are at present being treated with this type of hemodialysis system

Another is peritonealdialysis (PD) (or peritoneal lavage, vividialysis). With the CAPD system, dialysis is carried out through the patient's peritoneum (a membrane lining the abdominal cavity), usually four times a day in the patient's own home. With the APD system, dialysis is carried out automatically with the device (called a cycler) during a sleep.

In many cases, you often see a blood pressure monitor being used during, before/after such a treatment. It is an essential tool. Why is BP monitoring a must?

1. Blood pressure lowers continuously during treatment
2. Blood pressure will be lower after dialysis treatment, extracting large amount of fluid from the body. Too low blood pressure leads to a state of shock
3. Excess fluid reserve between treatments lead to high blood pressure, which may cause cardiac failure

You see weight monitoring, too. Before and after treatment, there may be a difference in weight. (1.0~5.0 kg loss of weight is expected due to extraction of waste matter in blood.)

A&D in Japan is one of the largest suppliers of both BP monitors and Weighing instruments for dialysis treatment facilities in Japan. For an international market, there is a family of bedside BP monitors with automatic/interval measurement cycle (TM-2540 series, TM-2550 series) as well as a compact high resolution weight scale (UC-321). Supported by a family of home use upper arm and wrist type BP monitors with IHB (irregular heartbeat) function, we provide a full range of instruments in order to serve the dialysis treatment market around the world.
