  SAE World Congress 2005 April
Reported by Takehiko Ogata International Division 4

SAE World Congress, Cobo Hall, Detroit, Michigan, USA (April 11 to 14, 2005)
Since 1905, the Society of Automotive Engineers has played a vital role in the development of the automobile industry. The SAE Show was held on 11th to 14th April 2005. This Show has been leading this world in motion for 100 years. About 800 companies exhibited at the Show this year.

We shared a booth with OPAL-RT and unveiled and displayed our DSP technology based products: AD-5435, Wheel Force Sensor, Axle Torque Sensor, cWCA, RT-Lab and Raptor demo models, which covered model based software & hardware customization and on-board sound & vibration analysis fields.

From A&D and OPAL-RT, 14 people in total joined the Show and attended the booth, led by A&D President Mr. Furukawa and OPAL-RT President Mr. Belanger.

Out of the Japanese companies present, only A&D and the other one had the honor of receiving Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State of Michigan, as a guest at our booth. It was aired on local TV and our management (Messrs Furukawa, Eto and Koyama) was interviewed by a local radio station, too.

We had many visitors from various backgrounds such as engineers, students, researchers and consultants from US, Korea and Europe. They were very impressed by our DSP based products. Thanks to the great support of Southwest Research Institute (SwRI), A&D could establish business networks and cooperation with other companies during the Show.

As for the sessions given during the Show, Mr. Furukawa (President), Mr. Eto (Divisional Director), Mr. Sugita (Deputy General Manager) and Mr. Koyama (Manager of our Ann Arbor office) attended the session, "Optimization Technique for Transient Emission Reduction of Heavy Duty Diesel Engine" which was presented by Mr. Yasunori Urata, Hino Motors Ltd.

Mr. Ken Masumoto, Director of Michigan Economic Development Corporation, also helped us have the opportunity to make the acquaintance of some local key persons to develop business from now on.

To my surprise, instead of applying to us, some Korean carmakers explained our WFS and Axle Torque Sensor to their colleagues. It turned out that they had received our explanation of the products on the previous day and been very impressed with our products' accuracy, repeatability, etc.

There were not only automobile related companies represented, but also some material testing and weighing product manufacturers. In particular, I learned that ultra filter microbalances are required in this field to detect diesel emission particles.

Lastly, SAE 2005 was our first opportunity to have a presence there. Despite our inexperience, we had many results from it and were confident of our technology and quality for the future.

Attendants:
From OPAL-RT side: President Mr. Belanger, Marketing Communications Specialist, Ms. Kirsty Whitefield, Team Leader Mr. Pierre Grondin, Automotive Business Development Manager Mr. Wensi Jin, Applications Consultant Mr. Pierre Francoir Allaire, and Alain.

From A&D side, President Mr. Furukawa, Director of Sales Department Mr. Eto, Ann Arbor Office Manager, Mr. Koyama, Deputy General Manager of Third Engineering Department Mr. Sugita, Messrs Furukawa, Tsujimoto, Katagiri and Ogata
