Automotive Testing Expo, Stuttgart, Germany, 8th -11th May 2006

Reported by Takehiko Ogata , International Division

The Automotive Testing Expo is the largest automotive testing and quality engineering show in Europe. 320 exhibitors displaying testing equipment and testing services gathered in the Trade Fair Center, Messe Frankfurt.

A&D Technology, Inc. (ADT) took part in the show along with colleagues from ADC (A&D Japan) and A&D Instruments UK (ADI). All of the staff cooperated together at the A&D booth in Messe Frankfurt. We had expected a large number of visitors with interest in our products and technology to visit our booth. We were proved right and in fact more visitors than expected showed up with a range of interesting queries.

ADI staff members, Takeo Goto (Managing Director), Tim Smith (Technical Manager), Simon Lawler (SE Powertrain Div.) and Julian Horseley (Sales Manager) attended the Expo and were able to get a good indication of the worldwide DSP market. From ADC, Hikaru Furukawa (President of A&D Group), Masatake Eto (Director of Sales), Mitsuharu Sugita (Deputy General Manager of R&D), Hiroshi Yoshida (Manager of R&D) and I, Mr. Ogata (Manager of Section 4, Int’l Sales Div.), attended the show. A&D Technology sent four staff members to the Show; Yoichiro Koyama (Managing Director), Craig Giraud (CAS Product Marketing Manger), George Shaw (Test Automation, Helios and iConnect Product Marketing Manager) and Peggy Kahl (Marketing) who all did a fantastic job of designing and managing the booth.

We displayed the following products:

  • Test Automation and Helios (Mapping and calibration)
  • iConnect (I/O box)
  • CAS (Combustion analysis system with knock analysis function)
  • AD5435 (Measurement controller with an ignition & fuel injection timing display and a kit with crank shaft with missing toothed gear)
  • cWCA (For sound & vibration analysis, demonstrating FFT, hammering, octave analysis and tracking analysis)

Even taking into account the fact that the exhibition was held in the center of Europe, only a few Japanese manufacturers including A&D Technology attended the show. Most of the other manufacturers were European. The reason for this was the quality of the products and/or technology exhibitors had manufactured. In other words, you have to qualify to exhibit or have a product, which is backed up with advanced technology. Throughout the duration of the Expo, our A&D team there was constantly thinking about what kind of technology and/or products could pique the interest of potential clients in the current automotive testing technology field. We were able to assess specific needs in the market and realized that we need to consider setting up an alliance between the hardware & software suppliers to meet vehicle manufacturers’ technical requests and produce cost effective results.

And now to return to the products we displayed at the Expo, I have included details of some of them below:

Starting with the AD-5435 with option AD-5430-12A (Timing Detection board) which demonstrates ignition and fuel ignition pulse based on engine rotation angle with crank angle sensor signal, encoder signal and missing teeth pulse.

Test Automation and iConnect systems:
The Test Automation system is the central control system in a modern Powertrain test cell. In this function it executes a predefined test schedule by coordinating the dynamometer and throttle systems, along with data acquisition from sensors on the test article or in-cell instruments.

The iCONNECT I/O system combines the benefits of a distributed network with high-quality I/O channels. The resulting system provides for minimal cabling and the ability to place an I/O where it is needed.

CAS (Combustion analysis system):
CAS II is the newest addition to our line of combustion analysis products. With all of the features of the original RedLine system, RedLine CAS II has the added benefit of knock analysis and portability, making it ideally suited for both in-vehicle and test cell applications.

For in-vehicle applications, clearly labeled BNC connectors are mounted to the top of the cabinet, allowing for easy connection to engine sensors. A built-in 12VCD power supply eliminates the need for special power inverters. Using an optional mounting bracket the system can be secured to the floor, or even strapped in with a seat belt.

cWCA (Compact World Class Analyzer): The compact cWCA is versatile enough to use anywhere, whether in the field, in a lab or even in a vehicle. The user-friendly GUI provides ease of operation, with workflow-oriented menus that reduce the time required for system setup, thereby boosting productivity.

WCA Pro, the powerful multi-analysis software, provides real-time FFT analysis for noise and vibration testing. Optional licenses for integrating real-time octave and tracking analysis are available. The system comes standard with throughput acquisition, allowing continuous recording for time history data to disk and repeated playback analyses. Offline playback analysis with a stand-alone PC is also available as an option.

For various reasons, we were unfortunately unable to display the Wheel Force Transducer and RTS with telemetry system at this show. However, we intend to show these high-end products at the next Testing Expo from September 6th to 8th this year in Shanghai, China. Please come visit us at Booth No. 3076. We look forward to seeing you there.
